City officials, residents and business owners and others are celebrating the end of construction on Sunset Drive, with the project completed on time and under budget.
Sunset Phase II (SR542) improvements include 2 driving lanes, a two-way left-turn lane, bicycle lanes, bus pullouts, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, enclosed drainage and street lighting. The project completes upgrades to Sunset Drive, reducing traffic congestion and providing safe bicycle and pedestrian access along the mile and a half corridor from Orleans Street to McLeod Road.
The project received significant state and federal funding, including grants from the Washington Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration and Washington Transportation Improvement Board.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to the neighbors along the Sunset Phase II construction corridor,” said Project Manager Mark Handzlik. “This was an inconvenience for a long time and they were patient and cooperative. We also want to thank the traveling public who tolerated the traffic delays, and even seemed to be avoiding the area during construction.”
Handzlik said the project is a model for future city projects, completed on time and under budget primarily due to Ram Construction’s meticulous coordination of the construction phases and attention to safety on the job site. They were cognizant of the environmental impacts of their work, and proactive in managing stormwater on the construction site, he said.
